The traffic you gained the current month suddenly drops by more than half of last months traffic.
You haven’t changed anything in the way you have been working and neither with your promotion strategy.
Why is this happen ?
When I started my website I also discovered these fluctuations in traffic, when I started to get web-traffic to my website and had to find out why and also find ways to get me out a sudden decrease in web-traffic and find some blog traffic tips to grow my web-traffic again.
So, let’s first look at why your web-traffic make these fluctuations in traffic and then dive into some blog traffic tips about how to rehab your website/blog.
Why Your web-traffic is decreasing
There are can be several reasons why your blog/websites traffic might have a decrease in traffic, and here are some of the common reasons:
1. Do you have fresh and updated content on your blog/website ?
Updating content at your blog/website is essential because the Search Engines love constantly updated content because the Search Engines don’t want people to find information on your website that is outdated or isn’t valid anymore.
Therefore, you need in general to have updated blogs and websites, and this will be rewarded with higher search engine rankings.
Therefore, If you’ve written high-quality blog posts on a continuously and SEO optimized them well, chances are much higher, that people will find your posts in the Search Engines.
Further, if your blog or website is constantly updated, visitors will be more likely to return to your blog/website because they know they’ll get new information every time.
If you are seeing a drop in web traffic, you need to check your content. A static website that just sits on the internet and likely won’t draw new visitors or keep old visitors from returning. Therefore, make sure, that you have a new post at your blog or website at least once a week.
If you make sure your blog or websites content is up-to-date regularly, you are actually also showing the Search Engines that your blog/website is active. You could also either update an article – with or without changing the date – or you could republish the post.
You will also have to be aware of, that with Googles latest updates, it appears that Google is continuing to reward “pillar” style content. Content that is thorough is continuing to become a bigger benchmark for SEO success.
You don’t see much content under 1,000 words ranking on the 1st page any longer, and for more competitive keyword terms 2,000-5,000 words are becoming more normal nowadays.
2. Your website can have seasonal fluctuations
Don’t panic if you see a decrease in traffic to your blog/website, because one of the biggest reasons for losing web traffic is seasonal. It’s well known in the blogging world that the good weather months in summer can be the worst months for growing blog traffic – also called the summer slump.
Your potential audience is simply less online during the summer. Instead of sitting in front of the computer, people prefer to enjoy the weather by vacationing, gardening and just BBQing and having fun outside.
Of course, you can have a website with increased web-traffic during the summer period, especially if your blog/website focus on topics like traveling/vacationing, gardening, camping, outdoor topics, etc..
If you don’t have a blog/website about these topics you can very well see a loss in traffic during the summer time.
3. Website speed is very slow
Nothing will send your visitors away faster than a slow loading website. People simply don’t have the patience for a slow website. Therefore if you notice a sudden drop in your website traffic, start by checking your website speed.
If your blog/website is running slow, then the first thing you need to check is if the slowness of your website may be caused by your local network.
The easiest way to determine this is simple – you just attempt to load another website from your local network and see whether it is also slow to load. Another way to check your blog/website speed is to ask friends or family that live a distance from you and have them to load your blog/website.
If it loads fine for them but not for you, then it’s most likely a local network issue. If it is your local network to blame, then you need to get in contact with it, to solve the problem. If it’s not the case, then your next step is to check up with your web hosting.
Another issue if your blog/website is loading slowly could be because of your blog/websites server.
The cause of slow servers usually lays with your web host.
- You could be having a slow website because you are hosted on a free web hosting server.
- Your blog/website is on a low-quality hosting service with poor support.
- Your website needs a higher spec hosting account with more resources, eg a VPS server.
Therefore you need to contact your hosting company and talk with the support and ask them to check if your current web hosting solution is adequate for your blog/website.
Next issue is to look at the structure of your blog/website.
A new blog/website will often load wonderfully quickly, but as your blog/website gets older and the content and images are growing, your blog/website will often begin to slow down and take longer time to load.
The reason for this is often linked to your blog/websites database, as the more information saved to your database and the more complex your blog/website is, the more likely will happen, that your blog/websites database will not run as effectively and fast as when the blog/website was first launched.
To determine if your database is the reason for your blog/websites lower speed, you can as mentioned before, perform a speed test on your blog/website. To test for database problems, there are plenty of tutorials on sites like YouTube, so don’t stress because often it’s a problem that’s easier to diagnose (and fix) than you would think.

4. If Your blog/website isn’t optimized for mobile devices, then it affects your Web-Traffic
Mobile is changing search habits and more and more web traffic comes from smartphones and tablets. If your blog/website isn’t mobile optimized, also called responsive websites, then your blog/website is in a big risk of losing web-traffic.
Responsive websites are the standard now, which means, that your blog/website must be able to scale proportionately for every kind of screen size. A few years back Google changed their algorithm to favor responsive websites over those that are not.
Even with a Responsive blog/website, further optimization can be necessary, like eg. information often needs to be specifically tailored to display differently in a mobile environment.
If you are using WordPress as CMS system, then optimization for a mobile upgrade is fairly straight-forward. The WordPress platform utilizes responsive themes.
5. Are you using Pinterest ? Then be aware of the Pinterest Algorithm Updates
If you work with Pinterest, then maybe you have tried to create a pin on Pinterest and it didn’t work, or Pinterest marked your pin as spam.
If you are seeing any of these issues on Pinterest, then it often indicates that Pinterest is going through an algorithm update.
But how does Pinterest decide which pins to choose in their search results ? Like any other Search Engine algorithm, Pinterest’s algorithms are also a complex mixture of different variables, and how the different variables are working within the Pinterest algorithm, Pinterest – like Google – hold these cards close to their chest.

Many bloggers have experienced different types of algorithm updates and how one update can turn a blog making 6 figures a month to make nearly nothing in a matter of one day.
In the SEO industry, it is very common to try to figure out what kinds of good and bad activities or websites Google is targeting.
Google Search is about information retrieval and that means knowing what a search query means and knowing what a web page means.
How to Rehab a Declining Blog/website’s Traffic
So, I have mentioned some common reasons why your blog/website traffic suddenly isn’t generating the same amount of traffic as it did previously.
Here are some blog traffic tips on how to fix a decrease in your blog/website traffic:
1. Be patient and wait it out
One of the first things you should do automatically when you first discover, that your web-traffic is decreasing is to do NOTHING.
Yes That’s right —– Nothing.
Be patient and wait to see if it is a small blip or a long term decline in web-traffic. If it ,for example, is caused by a Google update, I have often noticed that if my #1 posts aren’t raking anymore, I don’t do anything.
Because I often see, that over time, Google will re-assess the ranking posts and change it over time.
That is similar if Pinterest is being glitchy, I will wait a few days or a week to see what is going on. You can use the time, to read some relevant forums to see, if other bloggers are having the same issues as you.

2. Use your Google Analytics to analyze your decline in web-traffic
A decline in web-traffic has happened to every marketer out there – Many of us have tried, that you are just going through your daily reporting and login to your Google Analytics and see an unexpected, and noticeable, decline in web-traffic.
First off, don’t panic. At that moment, it is your most powerful tool to decode the reasons for the dreaded traffic dip. By combining the features from Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools, you are able to quickly and effectively pinpoint the reasons behind a traffic drop at your blog/website.
Here is what you need to look for:
Step 1 – Look at the timeline for your Traffic Drop – Did it happen over time or did it happen suddenly ?
Step 2 – Identify Your Traffic Sources – From which traffic sources are you mainly losing web-traffic ? – Use Google Analytics to identify this.
Step 3 – Be Aware of New Users vs. Returning Users – It is also very important to know who your users are and where they are coming from. Depending on which type of user, that has declined, you can often isolate certain reasons for the traffic drop from your blog/website.

One of the things that get me motivated is setting new goals and to do a challenge. You can ,for example, challenge yourself to write a blog post every day for a month.
By simply giving yourself a challenge and setting new goals for yourself and your blog/website, you will often be able to incorporate more creativity and more ideas to your blog/website, and this will also often help you to drive more traffic to your blog/website.
One of the best challenges is a content challenge and this can be:
- Post a video with every blog post you write.
- Write a blog post every day for a set time.
- Create 5 pins at Pinterest for each blog post.
2. Optimize Your Pinterest Board Titles
Start by going to your Pinterest profile and take a look at your board titles.
Are your Board titles optimized for your audience or did you put up your board titles more personal for your own preference ?
Having Board titles like – the coffee I love, My loving dog, – these kinds of Board title won’t help you reach a big audience on Pinterest.
The reason is, that Pinterest is a Search Engine like Google, and is also build in a way, to serve up the BEST information for the users.
Therefore to help Pinterest knowing what your Pinterest Boards are about, then pick some relevant keywords for your Pinterest Board titles.

By writing guest posts you can leverage another blog’s audience and that way you can get attention from another audience, that can help you boost your blog/website traffic.
So, find popular guest posting blogs within your niche – best with a blog with a large number of monthly readers – to write for and make sure you add your blog post with:
– A link to your blog/website.
– A link to a freebie related to the guest post topic.
– A link to a profile about you.
Your author bio is THE optimized place for your information, so make it stand out.
4. If web-traffic decline you need to work on the bigger picture
The reason why you started your blog/website was probably because it is your hobby or because you want to make money online, right ?
During slow traffic months, it is your opportunity to go back and assess your blog goal.
You need to look at the tasks you are doing to accomplish your blog goal.
For many some obvious tasks are to perform things, that can help you generate more income, more subscribers and more traffic!!
These types of tasks could include tasks such as:
- Creating an eBook to sell.
- Creating video lessons for a new course that you can sell or get new subscribers.
- Update old content at your blog/website.
Traffic is the lifeblood of your blog/website.
Relevant Traffic to your blog/website is what will help you grow a big loyal crowd of followers that often will buy the things that you promote.
So, yes, traffic is a BIG thing, but it’s a part of an even larger thing – YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS.
Therefore, focus on the big picture and find and test how to move traffic along to your blog/website to fulfill your goals.
